Tokyo was selected as the host city during the 125th IC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 2020 Summer Olympics is currently being held from 23rd July to 8th August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan. Intially it slated to begin on 24th July 2020, but the IOC (International Olympic Committee) announced the Games would be officially postponed. Organisers mentioned the event should be held safely, despite calls for it to be cancelled because of Covid.
From the history, the 2020 Games are fourth Olympics Games to be held in Japan. Year 1964 was the first time in Tokyo (Summer), following by 1972, Sapporo (Winter) and 1998 Nagano (Winter). Tokyo is the first city in Asia to hold the Summer Games twice.
The Olympics will feature 33 sports at 339 events across 42 venues. Most events are in the Greater Tokyo area, althought some football games and the marathon will take place in the northern city of Sapporo. There are some new sports which including baseball/softball, skateboarding, surfing, sport climbing and karate.
International athletes and support staff are being tested everyday. Athletes don't have to be vaccinated, though IOC officials expect around 80% will be.
